Quincy, Illinois is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and is the County Seat for Adams County. Many records still exist at the county courthouse and a large number of the records have been microfilmed. With many of its early residents coming from Germany, Quincy has a rich and unique German Heritage. Quincy has preserved many of the old mansions from its early days. Its history and architecture are important assets to the residents of this community.

The Great River Genealogical Society was organized in 1974. Its purpose is to foster the science of genealogy through educational and research programs with projects which discover, preserve, produce and publish knowledge of a genealogical or historical nature. The Great River Genealogical Society meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month from September through April. Meetings are held at the Quincy Senior and Family Resource Center, 639 York at 7:00 PM. The month of May is an annual dinner with the installation of officers.

Members and non-members are encouraged to send surnames being researched to be placed in our file at the Quincy Public Library. On Tuesdays, from 9:00 AM till 12:00 Noon, volunteers are available for help with research at the library.
